A meta-analysis of ABCG2 gene polymorphism and non-small cell lung cancer outcomes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fu,Lei; Wang,Rong; Yin,Ling; Shang,Xiaopu; Zhang,Runtong; Zhang,Pengjun.
Abstract We aimed to analyze the correlation between ABCG2 gene polymorphisms of 34 GG/(GA + AA) loci, 421 CC/(AC + AA) loci, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) therapeutic effects via meta-analysis. With key words, the databases PubMed and EMBASE were searched for clinical studies on ABCG2 polymorphism and NSCLC. RR and 95% CIs were used to compute combined effects, followed by heterogeneity testing. Publication bias was examined using the funnel plot method. Review Manager 5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis. Ten studies were included. No evidence of heterogeneity exists in these studies. The results indicate that two polymorphic loci of ABCG2 gene (34 G>A, and 421 C>A) had no relationship with the curative effect of chemotherapy for...

A meta-analysis of probiotics for preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm neonates BJMBR
Yang,Y.; Guo,Y.; Kan,Q.; Zhou,X.G.; Zhou,X.Y.; Li,Y..
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most common acquired diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in preterm infants. Some randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) have indicated that probiotics may potentially lower the incidence of NEC and mortality. However, debate still remains about the safety of probiotics and their influence on normal infant growth. We performed this meta-analysis to assess the safety and benefits of probiotic supplementation in preterm infants. We searched in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases for English references, and in Wanfang, VIP, and CNKI databases for Chinese references. Ultimately, 27 RCTs (including 9 Chinese articles) were incorporated into this meta-analysis. Relative risk (RR) and weighted mean difference...

A meta-analysis of the response of calorie demand to income changes AgEcon
Ogundari, Kolawole; Abdulai, Awudu.
Over the past three decades, several studies have analyzed the response of calorie intake to income with varying and inconclusive results. This paper review these studies and employs meta-analysis to examine the potential bias in the calorie-income elasticity, as well as the impact of specific study attributes on these elasticities reported in the empirical literature. A total of 40 studies which yielded 99 estimated elasticities were considered. The results show the presence of publication (reporting) selection bias in the reported elasticities. Besides, the estimates revealed evidence of positive and significant empirical effect of income on calorie intake from all the studies that goes beyond publication bias. Study attributes such as ranking of the...

ADRB2 polymorphisms predict the risk of myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wang,Dong-Wei; Liu,Min; Wang,Ping; Zhan,Xiang; Liu,Yu-Qing; Zhao,Luo-Sha.
Abstract Recently, the rs1042713 G > A and rs1042714 C > G polymorphisms in the beta-2 adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) gene were shown to be related to atherosclerosis diseases. Therefore, we performed a systemic meta-analysis to determine whether the two functional polymorphisms are related to the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and coronary artery disease (CAD). We identified published studies that are relevant to our topic of interest. Seven case-control studies, with a total of 6,843 subjects, were incorporated into the current meta-analysis. Our analysis showed a higher frequency of rs1042713 G > A variant in patients with MI or CAD compared to healthy controls. A similar result was also obtained with the rs1042714 C > G variant under both...

Agricultural Trade Policy Modelling: Insights from a Meta-Analysis of Doha Development Agenda Outcomes AgEcon
Hess, Sebastian; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan.
In a meta-analysis of trade policy models, Hess and von Cramon-Taubadel (2008) use over 5800 simulated welfare effects from 110 studies of potential Doha Development Agenda outcomes to identify characteristics of models, data and policy experiments that influence simulation results. This meta-analysis, which is recapitulated here, produces plausible results and explains a significant proportion of the variation in simulated welfare effects. However, due to insufficient documentation and the complexity of the general and partial equilibrium models in the literature sample, many explanatory variables employed in this analysis are binary. This precludes more detailed analysis of their impacts across models. Therefore, a partial equilibrium model and a single...

An overview of Brazilian mammalogy: trends, biases and future directions Rev. Bras. Zool.
Brito,Daniel; Oliveira,Leonardo C.; Oprea,Monik; Mello,Marco A. R..
Mammals are among the most charismatic and well-studied organisms, and Brazil harbors the largest mammal diversity of the world. The Brazilian Society of Mammalogy was established in 1985, and since 2001 it organizes the Brazilian Congress of Mammalogy. We used the proceedings of all three editions of this congress together with papers indexed in Web of Science and Scielo to evaluate trends in Brazilian mammalogy. All contributions were categorized according to mammalian order, biome, topic of research and state of authors' affiliation. Our results show that mammalian orders with higher species richness receive more attention, but the ranking is different between abstracts and papers. Higher species richness did not translate into more attention for more...

Association between tumor necrosis factor alpha rs1800629 polymorphism and risk of osteoarthritis in a Chinese population BJMBR
Chen,Jie; Wu,Yu; Yu,Jiannong; Shen,Jinming.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative disease affecting articular cartilage. Some studies indicate that tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) gene rs1800629 polymorphism was associated with OA risk among Caucasian populations. To examine the role of this candidate gene in Asian populations, we conducted a hospital-based case-control study involving 257 knee OA patients and 305 controls in a Chinese population. Genotyping was performed using a custom-by-design 48-Plex single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Scan™ kit. Our study indicated that the AA genotype of TNF-α rs1800629 polymorphism was associated with increased risk of OA. Subsequently, we conducted a meta-analysis and found that rs1800629 polymorphism increased the risk of OA in the...

Bone morphogenetic proteins: from structure to clinical use BJMBR
Granjeiro,J.M.; Oliveira,R.C.; Bustos-Valenzuela,J.C.; Sogayar,M.C.; Taga,R..
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are multi-functional growth factors belonging to the transforming growth factor ß superfamily. Family members are expressed during limb development, endochondral ossification, early fracture, and cartilage repair. The activity of BMPs was first identified in the 1960s but the proteins responsible for bone induction were unknown until the purification and cloning of human BMPs in the 1980s. To date, about 15 BMP family members have been identified and characterized. The signal triggered by BMPs is transduced through serine/threonine kinase receptors, type I and II subtypes. Three type I receptors have been shown to bind BMP ligands, namely: type IA and IB BMP receptors and type IA activin receptors. BMPs seem to be...

Combination of meta-analysis and graph clustering to identify prognostic markers of ESCC Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gao,Hongyun; Wang,Lishan; Cui,Shitao; Wang,Mingsong.
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most malignant gastrointestinal cancers and occurs at a high frequency rate in China and other Asian countries. Recently, several molecular markers were identified for predicting ESCC. Notwithstanding, additional prognostic markers, with a clear understanding of their underlying roles, are still required. Through bioinformatics, a graph-clustering method by DPClus was used to detect co-expressed modules. The aim was to identify a set of discriminating genes that could be used for predicting ESCC through graph-clustering and GO-term analysis. The results showed that CXCL12, CYP2C9, TGM3, MAL, S100A9, EMP-1 and SPRR3 were highly associated with ESCC development. In our study, all their predicted roles...
